Art Practice, Higher National

Diploma/Certificate (HND/C)

This course allows you the opportunity to develop both practical and creative thinking skills in multidisciplinary areas. The first year offers a broad introduction to techniques and practice, cultural and contextual studies, communication in art and design, media and materials practice and an individual project. Through lectures, workshops, educational trips, group / peer activities and one to one tutorials you will explore all aspects of art practice and build on your professional practice with live proposals and experience of work. In the second year, you will focus on a specialism and refine your skills and knowledge to progress onto a further degree programme or employment,

The programme has a strong emphasis on developing practical skills alongside specialist knowledge and understanding to meet the needs of the sector. BTEC Higher Nationals are recognised by employers as providing learners with the key concepts and practical skills for direct progression to either Higher Education or employment within the Creative Industries.

The programme is offered on both a part time and full time basis with the framework providing the flexibility to develop and support continuous professional development opportunities. Learners who achieve their BTEC Level 4 HNC can progress to the BTEC level 5 HND specialism and potentially progress to either a further degree programme or employment.

Within the programme learners will have to complete a level of professional practice. Strong links with the sector skills council and creative industries will facilitate industry related assignment briefs and realistic scenarios that provide an opportunity for learners to acquire professional work ethics, time management skills and team working. Learning is supported by contextual visits to galleries, museums and the working environment and enhanced by contributions from visiting lecturers and guest speakers.

Skills and Knowledge Developed: The programme will provide learners with the opportunity to master the essential skills of their chosen specialism and develop higher level skills in art practice.

Learners will broaden their experience and depth of knowledge allowing them to develop skills and attributes for an essential career in the creative industries and develop relationships with local and national organisations. Learners will develop a deep understanding of the design process from initial concept to the realisation of the final outcome and its situation within a broader context of art practice.

Please note: this course will only run when it has a sufficient number of applicants.

This programme will produce graduates skilled in a range of specialist practical areas. Progression will be through direct entry into the industry or through further study at Postgraduate level.
