Photography and Imaging Level 3 Extended Diploma

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Photography is a practical vocational two year course of study. It is intended to build and develop skills in photography and imaging and to enable students to create a portfolio of quality work and acquire related skills which will help secure entry into Higher Education, University or to provide an excellent foundation for employment in the vocational sector of photography & imaging or related media at Level 3.

The delivery of the programme is through: Project assignment work, Practical demonstrations, Workshops, Lectures, Mini tasks, Group critiques, Presentations, Contextual studies, Historical studies, Theory and Research.

You will also be expected to work independently and engage in group tasks within realistic time constraints in order to develop your skills. You will also benefit from working in well equipped specialist facilities.

The course programme is coordinated to ensure quality application in teaching and learning and promotes equality and diversity.

This is a two year course programme, consisting of 17 assignment projects for study and completion as follows:

Year 1

9 - Assignment Project Briefs plus Support Studies

Year 2

8 - Assignment Project Briefs plus Support Studies

Students will be required to purchase and provide programme course materials for their study, progression and assessment to include: - practical development, final prints, portfolio presentation – all requested support materials and research files.

If you do not have access to a digital camera and intend to buy one for the course of study, please delay purchase until you successfully enrol and the programme tutor will advise you on a suitable purchase within the initial weeks of study.

The department will also supply SLR film based cameras within the scheduled workshop sessions to enable student learning, support and progression whilst enrolled on the course.

This course is Advanced Learner Loan eligible, which can fully cover the course fee. The fee for this course is £8,583 for the academic year 15/16.

  • Practical activities that help your personal development including study skills, enrichment activities, employability training and classes in personal and social skills to get you ready for further education or employment.
  • Support to enable you to progress to the next level of study or employment

English and Maths

English and Maths skills are vital for employment and to secure a place on courses at a higher level, including university.

We have a team of tutors who will work with you to achieve these essential qualifications and enable you to apply these skills in your day to day activities and work.

Since September 2013 any young person who does not achieve their GCSE in English language and mathematics at grade C or above will have to continue their studies at college. Students who have a grade D in either subject must study these subjects at GCSE level.

Successful completion of this programme can lead to

Higher education - BTEC HNC, HND, BA / BSC Degree or Foundation Degree.

The course will also give an opportunity to access Professional Qualifications - BIPP. Employment as assistant / junior / technician / photographer, or in related media professions.

Please note that for some university courses you may need GCSE English and/or Maths and Science at C or above. You must check this with the universities you may wish to apply to.
