Musical Theatre Level 3 Extended Diploma

Advanced Learner Loan Eligible

Course Content

The course focuses on singing, acting and dance, giving you the opportunity to develop the skills needed to work in the performing arts industry, whilst achieving the equivalent of three A-levels. The course is realistic and contemporary, reflecting current trends within musical theatre and preparing graduates for further training at some of the best institutions in the country.

What will I learn?

Over the two years you will develop a strong understanding and knowledge of technique across acting, dance and singing. In acting you will investigate the approaches of different practitioners, and develop your creativity in improvisation and devising. Singing classes explore healthy vocal technique to expand range and repertoire and your dance studies will include expert tuition in ballet, jazz and street and commercial and urban dance.

All tutors have extensive industry experience (from the West End to BBC to So You Think You Can Dance) and most still tour regionally and nationally. Students take part in a programme of performances, workshops and masterclasses designed to build skills in every aspect of the profession and complement their regular training. You will also be given opportunities to take part in professional work to enhance your CV and develop professional contacts. Graduates from musical theatre are currently studying at LIPA, The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and London College of Music, as well as numerous other higher education institutes, some are even working for Disney!

On the first year you will develop the basic skills needed to be a musical theatre performer. Within acting you will explore the approaches of different practitioners, develop your creativity in improvisation and create pieces to be performed at festivals across the city. Singing classes explore healthy vocal technique to improve confidence and expand range and repertoire. In dance classes ballet develops core strength and flexibility alongside jazz classes where you will work on technique and learn routines to your favourite songs! You will also study the business side of the industry learning about the various roles and how to professionally represent yourself to get future work. The highlight of the course are the musical theatre performance pieces where you will get an opportunity to perform pieces from classical and contemporary musicals in our fabulous performance space.

Following successful completion of the first year you will progress onto the second year. This year is geared towards progression and further creative development. In acting auditions you will work on monologues and songs for your auditions for drama school and beyond. Your acting skills are further developed in applied acting and classical theatre, ensuring you can hold your own in any genre! Ballet continues and street, commercial and urban dance are introduced to expand the skills learnt in the first year. No performance is created in a vacuum and historical context gives an opportunity to explore the many external influences on performance. Singing continues in the second year developing basic music theory and sight singing skills alongside Motown and Duet projects and public performances. The year culminates in a full scale performance of a musical theatre show which gives students an opportunity to showcase all the skills they have worked so hard to develop – past performances include Bad Girls The Musical, Avenue Q, Seussical The Musical, Lysistrata Jones The Musical and Bare A Pop Opera.
