Carpentry & Joinery - Site & Bench levels

2 & 3 (NVQs and Apprenticeships)

Our Apprenticeship and NVQ programmes will develop new or existing employees so you will be able to:

Observe all Health & Safety requirements and work efficiently in the workplace

Manufacture routine bench joinery products, install first and second fix components, erect complex structural

carcassing components, maintain non structural and structural components in the workplace

Set up and use circular saws in the workplace.

If you enjoy using your hands, have good hand and eye co-ordination and enjoy being part of a team then a Carpenter or Joiner could be the ideal role for you.

Apprenticeship content:

The following qualifications for this Apprenticeship are offered:

• NVQ level 2 Wood Occupations (Onsite Competence Based Element )

Level 2 Technical certificate/Diploma (In College Knowledge based element)

• Diploma in Bench Joinery Level 2

or

• Diploma in Site Carpentry Level 2

Employment rights and responsibilities

• This part of the apprenticeship is covered in the Technical certificate/Diploma

Functional Skills:

• This element ensures that apprentices have the Numeracy level 1 and Literacy level 1 skills they need to function effectively in the workplace. Usually completed in Level 2 apprenticeships.

Advanced Apprenticeship content:

The following qualifications for this Advanced Apprenticeship are offered:

An assessor is assigned to each student to provide guidance and support throughout the programme. NVQ assessment is carried out in the workplace

All of our Study Programmes are designed to help you to develop your skills and widen your college experience.

What you should expect from your Study Programme:

  • Help to achieve GCSE English and maths at grades A*-C if you do not already have them
  • Practical activities that help your personal development including study skills, enrichment activities, employability training and classes in personal and social skills to get you ready for further education or employment.
  • Support to enable you to progress to the next level of study or employment

English and Maths

English and Maths skills are vital for employment and to secure a place on courses at a higher level, including university.

We have a team of tutors who will work with you to achieve these essential qualifications and enable you to apply these skills in your day to day activities and work.

Since September 2013 any young person who does not achieve their GCSE in English language and mathematics at grade C or above will have to continue their studies at college. Students who have a grade D in either subject must study these subjects at GCSE level.

What the course leads to

Carpenters and joiners often move into other related trades such as shopfitting, formworking, bench joinery, maintenance work and systems installation. They may also want to move into the technical or supervisory side of the industry.
