Access to Higher Education

Last updated on 07/09/2010

What is Access?

Access is a one year programme of study for learners age 19 plus who will normally have substantial experience of life outside formal education, gained since completing compulsory schooling.

It builds on the wisdom and experience of mature students and presents an alternative to GCSE and A-levels for HE entry. Most people who succeed at Access go on to do a degree or equivalent course at a university or other HE institution.

Why choose an Access course?

Access is a challenging course that prepares students exceptionally well for university so that most are able to complete their degree courses to a very good standard. Past students tell us that the skills acquired at college mean they compare favourably with other undergraduates and it prepares them for the academic demands of a university course.

Which qualifications do I need?

All students applying for the Access to HE programme will complete an English and maths assessment.

For some higher education courses applicants will need to have GCSE English or maths (C or above) before beginning the course. It may be possible for Students with one of these subjects to study the other GCSE or OCN GCSE equivalents alongside their full Access course. Entry to the programme without these is at the discretion of the course team.

How long will it take?

The Access programme is taken over one academic year (September to July). If necessary you can spend up to one year on the pre-Access programme before taking Access to HE. The number of hours and weeks you should attend vary according to your programme. If you are in receipt of unemployment benefit you may remain available for work whilst on Access.

Which subjects can I study?

You choose a 'pathway' or combination of subjects. You may be able to combine subjects from more than one pathway, on discussion with a tutor.

Which qualifications will I receive?

You will receive a diploma recording your achievement in every unit you have taken. To complete the programme successfully, you usually need to gain 20 units to achieve the QAA approved Access certificate. The units must combine the core elements to all pathways, the compulsory element for your chosen pathway and the selected options. You will be assessed by assignments during the course and by examination.

What preparation do I need to do?

Give serious thought to the degree course you wish to go on to do, and look at relevant prospectuses. Arrange to observe your chosen job at first hand, perhaps by working as a volunteer. This is essential for teaching, social work, nursing and subjects allied to medicine. In addition you will be required to successfully complete an enhanced CRB check to train and work in the profession. Past criminal convictions must be declared. If you are concerned we recommend you contact the professional bodies as soon as possible to discuss your position.
