Academic Route

A levels are well known by many learners and parents. They are usually studied over two years, in two parts with AS in the first year and A2 in the second.

At Liverpool Community college we have a number of A levels to choose from. Many are taken at the Clarence Street site whilst some requiring specialist facilities are taken at the Arts Centre.

In 2007/08 807 (656 in 06/07) exams were taken with Chemistry, Physics, French, Drama, Law and Government and Politics all achieving 100% pass rate - 72% taking French achieving grade A. The overall pass rate was 96%.

One 18 year old student who achieved 4 A grades, obtained one of the top five marks in the country for General Studies. She has a place at Cambridge University reading Geography.


Lucy Gettings

Lucy Gettings (aged 18) - English Language: A; History: A; Geography: A; General Studies; A (one of top five marks in country)

Lucy wanted to come to college for the experience and feels she is better equipped to handle university. She has been offered a place at Cambridge University studying geography. She said: "College has been a great experience; there is more freedom and it’s more relaxed. You’re learning with people who’ve chosen to be there and that make a big difference to your learning experience. I’ve made some good friends."


Michael Johnson

Michael Johnson (aged 18) - English: A; History: A; Mathematics: A; Politics: A

Found out about college through Connexions. Michael will study philosophy and economics at Oxford in autumn 2008. He said: "My teachers have been great and I've had the best fun. I'm really gonna miss this place!"


Rebecca Smyth

Rebecca Smyth (aged 19) - Psychology: A; Sociology: A; Media Studies: B

Came to college to resit A-levels and will start a Psychology degree at LJMU in September 2008. She said: "I can't speak highly enough about the college and the great support I've received from tutors. It's a much better environment here and it has some great resources. I'd recommend college to anyone."


Marissa Stoffer

Marissa Stoffer (aged 19) - English Language: A; English Literature A; Fine Art & Design: A; Psychology: A;

Marissa will stay at the college's Arts Centre studying for a Foundation Degree in Fine Arts and hopes to pursue a career in the arts world. She said: "Really enjoyed being at college and I've made lots of friends. It's such a great atmosphere."


Michaela Quinn

Michaela Quinn (aged 22) – Biology: A; Chemistry: A; Geography: B

Michaela will take up a place this autumn at LJMU studying pharmacy. She said: "I can't praise the teachers at college enough they are brilliant. If you want to study they put themselves out for you; nothing is too much trouble. I've had the best experience and I'd recommend it to anyone."
