This exciting Foundation Degree in Design and Fashion Technology validated by Liverpool John Moores University is delivered over two years on a full time basis. Students will be introduced to the technical and creative skills to prepare them for employment in the Fashion Sector whilst allowing them to progress to honours degree level upon completion. At Level 4, students will develop a range of skills such as designing, pattern cutting and manufacturing garments, and will develop their creative process by experimenting with a diversity of contemporary techniques and materials. Students will also make reference to fashion design work from past and from contemporary design practices. Students will also be introduced to a range of Computer Aided Design software to communicate their design ideas and to develop innovative printed textiles.

At Level 5, students will enhance their professional profile by building a portfolio showcasing a wide range of skills to prepare them for employment and progression to higher education. Students will apply their skills gained at Level 4 and will develop further their ability in using more advanced techniques in designing, pattern cutting and in manufacturing. Students will self-direct their learning by reflecting on their personal and professional development with a strong emphasis on the market place and the cultural context of fashion and textiles design.

Students will take part in work based activities and will undertake a placement in the fashion and textiles sector between Level 4 and Level 5.

At Level 4, students will be introduced to a range of design research methods and will explore a range of media and techniques for communicating their ideas creatively. Students will also develop their analytical skills by examining and comparing examples of fashion design work from past and from contemporary design practices and by underpinning the main concepts in relation to its social, cultural and economic contexts. The Pattern and Manufacture related module will provide appropriate pattern cutting and manufacturing skills to enable students to produce patterns and garment with practical knowledge and understanding of its position within the design and production process. Students will be introduced through lectures and workshops to a range of new technologies related to Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Manufacture software used in the fashion industry such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and Gerber. Throughout all modules analytical skills will be developed enabling students to reflect on their developments and progressions.

At Level 5, Students will apply and develop their creative skills, through in depth exploration and testing of techniques in preparation of their mini collection. Students will demonstrate a clear understanding of the creative process from initial ideas with a global context focus to strong conceptual outcomes. Pattern and manufacture modules will have cumulative activities to further develop and build upon technical skills and knowledge related to pattern Construction and manufacturing technology gained at Level 4, for more advanced styling adaptations and methods of production. Students will enhance their professional profile by preparing them for related jobs in the fashion industry. Students will be encouraged to attend presentations and career talks given by professionals and will be encouraged to participate in competitions, live-briefs to enhance their portfolio and professional practices. Students will create their professional portfolio for progression to Level 6 or to employment. Students will be introduced to communication and promotion techniques by exploring contemporary media and techniques. Throughout all modules students will analyse and critically appraise their own work.

Students successfully completing Level 4 and Level 5 will be awarded a Foundation Degree (FdA) in Design and Fashion Technology. Foundation Degree graduates have a direct route to the final year of a named Honours Degree at LJMU: BA (Hons) Fashion and/or will progress to a job in the Fashion and Textiles sector.
