Performing Arts (Touring Theatre), Higher

National Certificate/Diploma (HNC/HND)

The course is designed to focus on one of the most common forms of performance industry employment, but also one of the least explored in Performing Arts courses. There are very few HE organisations that teach the formation and successful implementation of a Touring Theatre Company.

This programme is a selection of primarily level 5 modules that best reflect the requirements of both employment in the professional arts industry and/or progression onto BA Hons Drama, or Drama schools. In each subject area explored, there is a balance of deep practical exploration, underpinned by academic elements of critical analysis, research and theoretical study, but the ultimate emphasis will be to form and function as an actual touring theatre company, creating bespoke pieces of theatre for different types of audience, while forming your own company identity. The aim is to allow the building blocks explored on the course to serve as a launch pad for your company’s professional development, upon completion of the course.

The modules are chosen to help prepare graduating students for the most likely destinations they choose to pursue, be that continuing their education, or finding work as a self-employed practitioner of performing arts.

The programme features specialist modules, delivered by staff with a wealth of professional experience in each subject area.

Special Features: Within the scheme, there will be opportunity for the learners to attain a level of professional practice. Strong links to the Creative Industries and the Acting and degree programmes will facilitate industry-related briefs and real scenarios that provide an opportunity for students to acquire professional work ethics, time planning skills and working within a creative team. Learning is supported through a series of contextual visits, including local theatres, a variety of performances and project-specific research trips, which have previously included locations ranging from Port Meirion to Poland.

Guest speakers and workshops with professional practitioners / companies will also be scheduled into the programme.

Performances may take place in a variety of spaces, including studios, a college theatre fully equipped for professional performance, local theatres and arts facilities and site specific locations.

Please note: this course will only run when it has a sufficient number of applicants.

This programme will produce graduates skilled in a broad range of specialist areas, progression will be through direct entry into the industry or through further study at post graduate level.
