Student Interview Checklist
Last updated on 15 December 2009
If you are invited to an interview, you may find this information useful. Please
bring your Record of Achievement with you if you have one.
Q What are you doing now?
If you're learning at college, what subjects are you following? What
qualifications/grades do you hope to get?
If you're not in learning at the moment, what are you doing (eg. In work, seeking
work, caring for children/parents)?
Q What have you done?
This is a chance to talk about jobs or work experience, raising a family, interests
and hobbies.
Q Why have you chosen this course?
What do you want to do after you get your qualification?
This is a chance to make sure that the course you've applied for is the best
route for your chosen goal.
Q Would you benefit from study support in English, maths or language?
Many students benefit every year from the study support we offer. This support makes
sure that your English and maths skills are at the level you need for your course.
Language support is available for students who are speakers of other languages.
Your tutor may require you to take up study support as part of the offer of a place
or after you start the course. Find out more about study support at your interview.
Q Are there any financial issues that need to be considered?
This is an opportunity to ask about course-related costs such as tuition and exam fees, books, stationery, equipment, materials and educational visits.
You can also contact Student Services for information, advice and
guidance about options for funding your course.
Q Do you have study support needs relating to a learning difficulty, disability
or medical condition?
It is very important that you let us know if you have additional needs to ensure the
right resources are in place to support you to succeed.
There are other areas that may be covered at your interview depending on the
requirements of the course you have applied for or the job the course will prepare
you for.
Your questions
You could also make a list of questions you want to ask us. These may help you.
- Can you tell me what my timetable will be and will I need to attend more than
one centre?
- How much time will I need to spend learning on my own?
- Are there any exams and will I need to do coursework that counts towards my
qualification?
- Will there be somebody I can talk to about my progress?
- Are there computers available that students can use?
- Will I have to buy books for my course and is there a college library?
Please make sure you know which qualification(s) you will get at the end of your
course. Find out if there are certain conditions you need to meet to be entered
for the qualification, for example attendance or marks for coursework.
Please don't cancel your interview without good reason - you may lose your college
place.
