Media students were a knock-out at City’s first UFC event

City of Liverpool College students sampled life in the real world in April after working behind the scenes at the first ever Ultimate Fighting Championship® (UFC) boxing event at a leading venue in the City.

Five students studying on NCTJ Fast Track Journalism and Media, Broadcast and Journalism courses, worked alongside the UFC crew and Echo Arena staff to ensure that what was to become the highest grossing sport event in the venue’s history was an outright success.

The young learners, all studying for a career in media, took on various roles, including driving the crew around for the weekend as well as general runners and cable bashers on the night of the fight.

Kristina Frenchum, Production Manager for CTV Outside Broadcasts, who provided this invaluable opportunity, said: “I had great feedback from the crew about media, broadcast and journalism students, “Max (O'Toole), Laura (Mcloughlin), Megan (Whiteside) and Daniel (Thomas).  They proved to be a real asset to the camera team, showing a keenness to help and listening well to direction.

“There were also several mentions from crew members, the Tech Producer and many of our US clients about how brilliant Daniel Jones (NCTJ Fast Track Journalism) was throughout the event. All the students are fine examples of what we look for in any new recruits to the industry and we hope to stay in touch in the future if further opportunities arise.”

UFC is the fastest growing sport in the world, with this event alone attracting more than 100,000 people from across the region.

Ashley Leach, Curriculum Leader for Media, Journalism and Broadcast at The City of Liverpool College, said: “An event of this scale is a great example of the real-life opportunities we provide for our students to gain invaluable work experience, which is an integral part of all courses at The City of Liverpool College.

“During their time with us, students work on a number of events and activities that will equip them with a range of practical skills needed for success in their chosen career.”

The students plan to follow higher level media courses at both the College and university in September, with Daniel pursuing a career as a journalist after completing the NCTJ fast-track Journalism course in May.
