Kuumba Imani Nursery
Last updated on 12/01/2010
The Kuumba Imani nursery is a community based nursery that is located in the Kuumba Imani
Millennium Centre.
The nursery provides childcare to students attending the city centre sites of The Arts Centre,
Duke St,Clarence Street and nearby Crawford House.
There are five fully qualified Nursery Officers, three of whom are full time staff, with two Lunchtime
Assistants employed during the lunch period to ensure there are, the required number of staff available
throughout the day.
The nursery staff are committed to providing a warm, friendly and caring environment, with every child
regarded as a special and unique child.
Each member of staff will act as a key person to a designated number of children. The children may choose
their own key person, when they feel comfortable with a member of staff.
The nursery staff recognise parents/carers as the child's primary educators. During the induction session,
nursery staff will gain valuable information from parents/carers so they are aware of some of their individual
characteristics.
The nursery is registered for 14 children aged 1-4 years. The setting comprises of a spacious room, which
is divided into a comfortable carpeted area and an area for water/sand play and art and craft activities. There
is a sensory room, where the children experience the various mood lights and textures. This room is a particular
favourite with the children and the smaller area provides them with a cosy and yet stimulating space.
The children can move freely within the setting and are encouraged to choose their own activities, so that
they become independent learners. Similarly, they are supported to participate in the various learning
experiences and opportunities.
In addition, there is a large outdoor play area, which children have access to at each session.
