Student aged 19 years and under:-
Q. I am 18 years old, do I have to pay for my childcare?
A. No, if you are 19 years or under at the start of your course you are entitled to Care 2 Learn Funding. Care 2 Learn may also
pay for travel costs to and from your childcare provider to you learning provider. Care 2 Learn can also offer study time as long
as your childcare costs do not exceed £160 per week.
Students aged 20 years and over:-
Q. When do I have to apply for childcare?
A. Early application is essential. There is usually a high demand for childcare support and childcare will be offered on a
first come, first served basis.
Q. I'm not sure what course I want to do yet, can I apply for childcare before I have a place on a course?
A. Yes, you can apply for childcare before you have a place on a course. If you decide not to come to college, the
childcare application will be withdrawn.
Q. Can I choose my own childcare setting?
A. Yes, every parent has the choice where they can use their childcare support.
Q. Do you have college nurseries and where are they?
A. Yes, there are 2 college nurseries providing full day care.
I. There is a nursery at Bankfield Centre (L13). This nursery provides
on-site provision to students studying at Bankfield.
II. There is a nursery at the Learning Exchange (L1).
This nursery is convenient for all the city centre sites.
The college nurseries provide excellent childcare to student parents. The majority of staff are fully qualified and provide a
caring and welcoming environment, where children can learn through play.
Q. Can I have study time?
A. There maybe study hours available in the college nurseries, however, study hours are not available in external settings.
Q. Do I have to be on benefits to get financial childcare support?
A. Yes, students need to be on a means tested benefit to be eligible for financial childcare support from the discretionary
Learner Support Fund. In academic year 10/11 students parents must be on Income Support, JSA, Working Tax Credit with a family income
of less than £15,276 in the last tax year. The financial criteria for 2011/12 is yet to be confirmed by the government.
