English Literature is one of the most vibrant and popular subjects to study at A level. It is highly valued by both Universities and employers as a traditional academic subject of high status. It combines easily with every subject in both Arts and Science areas and develops skills in:

The first year of your studies will include:

A1 Year

Poetry: Component 1 (2 hour Exam) 30%

John Keats – Selected Poems (Penguin Classics)

Carol Ann Duffy – Mean Time (Picador)

Philip Larkin – The Whitsun Weddings (Faber)

Drama: Component 2 (2 hour Exam) 30%

William Shakespeare – Hamlet (Penguin Classics)

Tennessee Williams – A Streetcar Named Desire (Penguin Modern Classics)

John Webster – The Duchess of Malfi (Arden)

A2 Year

Poetry and Drama will continue from A1 year.

Unseen Texts: Component 3 (2 hour Exam) 20%

Prose Extract from 1880-1910

Poetry from any era

Coursework (3,500 words): Component 4 (Internal Moderation) 20%

2 x novels: 1 from pre-2000 & one from post-2000

Your choice of novels which must be of significant literary merit and authorised by the exam board.

The full A level will take two years to complete at a cost of £500 plus exam fee per year.
