This programme is aimed at laboratory technicians who work or are looking to be employed in a wide range of organisations including educational and pharmaceutical employers as well as chemical and analytical science services.

Knowledge element – Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Applied Science (QTF) – delivered over 2 years and requires the candidate to attend The City of Liverpool College on a day release/twilight basis. The course covers topics such as Chemistry, Physics and Biological Science.

Competence element – Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities (QCF) – delivered over 2 years in the workplace.

Functional Skills in Maths, English and Information Communication Technology at Level 2 are offered as part of the programme although candidates will usually hold GCSEs already in these subjects.

Apprentices will be provided with an Employees Rights and Responsibilities Workbook

Assessment: The NVQ programme is modular, and consists of core and optional units. All assessments are carried out in the workplace. Assessment of the NVQ is continuous by a variety of methods including observation of practical skills, oral questioning, written statements and projects. The BTEC Diploma in Applied Science is assessed by assignment and course work and comprises of a number of units covering all aspects of applied science.
