A Level

History

A Level History is not about simply learning facts about the past. That would have no purpose! Instead history is about learning why things happened the way they did and what the effect of that was. This enables you to critically assess the world around you and gives you a highly prized set of skills for a broad range of careers.

This programme delivered by dedicated tutors at The City of Liverpool College gives you a solid grounding in the broad range of historical skills you will need to progress to more specialised subjects at university. You will study a broad range of history over the two years including the Tudors, the Stuarts, and Weimar and Nazi Germany. Questions about the power of the state and state endorsed discrimination against particular groups will reoccur across the topics enabling you to see change and continuity over four hundred years.

History works well alongside other humanities and social science based subjects. Government and Politics, Critical Thinking, General Studies, Sociology, and Psychology would all complement each other. They develop your analytical and essay writing skills, shaping you into a critical individual that does not take things at first glance. Your psychology work will influence how you see the reasons for the events you study, sociology will aid with your interpretation of the Tudor and Stuart worlds – so very different from our own – and Politics will introduce theories of governance which are explored through real examples in history.

You can start following us on twitter @HistoryLiv and send any questions you might have our way – including regarding any recommended pre-course reading/viewing!.
