Uniformed Public Services - NCFE

Level 1 Diploma

This course is a good introduction to the work of the uniformed public services. This course is suitable for anyone interested in a career in the public services such as the:

• armed forces,

• fire service,

• police and;

• prison service.

You should have and be prepared to develop a good level of physical fitness and enjoy participating in sport and outdoor pursuits. You will study a range of units covering health and fitness for entry to services, map reading, personal skills for public service and leadership, practical teamwork, public service incidents and an introduction to expedition skills.

Additionally you will have opportunity to study Functional Skills in English, Mathematics and ICT. This will include NCFE Level 1 job and interview skills, whereby you will gain confidence in areas such as; interviews, CV writing and applications.

You will gain essential work experience which we will secure you a place on throughout the course. We deliver a number of educational trips, from fire stations to court visits. We invite key speakers from all areas of public services for you to gain insight into their job role and help you decide which career you want to pursue. Our teaching staff are highly qualified and are from all areas of industry, such as experience from senior positions in Merseyside Police, the RAF and Army. The tutors use their experience to ensure you are supported throughout your studies with us and feel confident in your next step.

All of our Study Programmes are designed to help you to develop your skills and widen your college experience.

What you should expect from your Study Programme:

  • A substantial qualification e.g. GCSE, A level or vocational equivalent
  • Meaningful work experience
  • Help to achieve GCSE English and maths at grades A*-C if you do not already have them
  • Practical activities that help your personal development including study skills, enrichment activities, employability training and classes in personal and social skills to get you ready for further education or employment.
  • Support to enable you to progress to the next level of study or employment

English and Maths

English and Maths skills are vital for employment and to secure a place on courses at a higher level, including university.

We have a team of tutors who will work with you to achieve these essential qualifications and enable you to apply these skills in your day to day activities and work.

Since September 2013 any young person who does not achieve their GCSE in English language and mathematics at grade C or above will have to continue their studies at college. Students who have a grade D in either subject must study these subjects at GCSE level.

You could progress at the College to the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Public Services or other related Level 2 courses. Alternatively progression to employment or apprenticeship training. This course supports you in your application for the armed forces.
