Fashion, UAL Level 3 Applied General/Extended Diploma

Interested in a career in Fashion? The world of Fashion is exciting and dynamic with a broad range of career opportunities. The course provides specialist pathways of fashion & clothing, fashion styling & promotion, visual communication, fashion brand management and textiles. This course encourages students to develop individually and gain expertise, thus enabling you to turn your inspirations into a viable catwalk collection and work towards developing an avant-garde portfolio.

This innovative course covers a wide spectrum of related studies leading to your chosen pathway with core units in:-

• Visual language

• Material techniques and processes

• Ideas and concepts

• Communication

• Contextual research

• Planning and problem solving

Learning is mainly through practical demonstrations, group work, lectures, individual projects and presentations and you will be expected to work independently and within realistic time constraint, in order to develop your skills fully. You will also benefit from working in well equipped studios, housing state of the art technologies.

Year 1: The course consists of a number of exciting assignment briefs to include working on live project briefs, which are internally assessed. The final assignment is a controlled externally assessed project graded by the awarding body.

Year 2: This year consists of a number of assignment briefs developed within your chosen area of fashion which is externally assessed and externally moderated.

This course involves educational visits and previous visits have included London Fashion Week, The Clothes Show Live, Victoria & Albert Fashion Museum and the Royal Armouries Museum.

Student work is showcased each year in the end of year Fashion Show.

Assessment

The assessment for the Level 3 Applied General Diploma and Extended Diploma in Art & Design is summarised as follows:

Level 3 Applied General Diploma in Art & Design

Unit 1: Diagnostic investigation in art and design

• Externally set assignment (100% of qualification)

• Externally marked by UAL Awarding Body

Level 3 Applied General Extended Diploma in Art & Design

Unit 1: Diagnostic investigation in art and design

• Externally set assignment (50% of qualification)

• Externally marked by UAL Awarding Body

Unit 2: Specialist practice in art and design

• Portfolio of evidence (50% of qualification)

• Internally assessed by the centre, externally moderated by UAL Awarding Body

The final grade for the Diploma is determined entirely by the grade achieved in Unit 1. The structure is Fail, Pass, Merit and Distinction.

This course is Advanced Learning Loan eligible, which can fully cover the course fee.

English and Maths

English and Maths skills are vital for employment and to secure a place on courses at a higher level, including university.

We have a team of tutors who will work with you to achieve these essential qualifications and enable you to apply these skills in your day to day activities and work.

Since September 2013 any young person who does not achieve their GCSE in English language and mathematics at grade C or above will have to continue their studies at college. Students who have a grade D in either subject must study these subjects at GCSE level.

What the course can lead to:

Employment within the fashion and clothing industry as a fashion designer, illustrator, stylist, pattern cutter, garment technologist, fashion buyer, fashion retail manager or supervisor, small business owner, visual merchandiser, production manager.

The qualification will help gain entry onto one of the higher education courses such as, Foundation Degree, BA in Fashion, Design and Textile related studies, and other degree programmes in Higher Education.

Many of our students progress to degree courses at London College of Fashion, UCLAN, Manchester Metropolitan University, LJMU, Leeds College of Art etc.
