Music Level 3 Diploma

The Level 3 Diploma in Music runs over 2 years and is equivalent to 3 A Levels. It is aimed at all singers and instrumentalists from all styles of music and will prepare you for a career in the music and associated industries. It is a vocational course which has a balance between both the practical and academic subjects and covers all aspects of the music business, from writing your own songs, rehearsing, performing and working in bands, recording your music and the creative use of music technology, studying popular music culture and history, as well as looking in detail at all aspects of the music business. Music theory, sight reading and aural skills are also given high priority on the course and are studied across both the 1st and 2nd years.

The course is comprised of the following units:

Unit 7 Composing music

Unit 9 Music production (recording techniques)

Unit 12 Improvising

Unit 16 Major music project (music performances)

Unit 19 Music and society (music business)

Unit 22 Session styles

Unit 23 Performance techniques (band skills)

Unit 27 Music theory & Harmony

Unit 30 Pop music in practice

Unit 32 Sequencing systems

Unit 34 Contemporary song writing

Unit 37 Functional keyboard skills

Unit 39 The music industry (music business)

Unit 40 Music ensemble (band rehearsal skills)

Unit 41 Music notation software

Unit 42 Singing techniques and performance

Applicants without level 2 qualifications in numeracy, literacy and IT will be required to achieve qualifications in this in the first year of the programme.

We have a team of tutors who will work with you to achieve these essential qualifications and enable you to apply these skills in your day to day activities and work.

Since September 2013 any young person who does not achieve their GCSE in English language and mathematics at grade C or above will have to continue their studies at college. Students who have a grade D in either subject must study these subjects at GCSE level.

What the course leads to

By the end of the course you will have the necessary skills to plan and organise your own band, begin a career as a self-employed /freelance musician or to gain entry to higher education and continue your studies at university or continue onto the Foundation Degree in Popular Music here at the Liverpool Community College.
