Theatrical Special Effects, Hair and Make-Up

At the City of Liverpool College, our programme enables you to develop the skills needed for a career in specialist hair and make-up, with possible careers in the theatre or film industry. Specialist units including; make-up and full body make-up for performers, special effects make-up, make-up using prosthetics, fantasy hair design and hair styling and dressing.

The units you will study include:

• Working with colleagues within the beauty related industries

• Monitor and maintain health and safety practice in the salon

• Creative hairdressing design skills

• Fashion and photographic make-up

• Apply airbrush make-up to the face

• Media make-up

• Apply prosthetic pieces and bald caps

• Provide self-tanning

• Style and fit postiche

• Create and cast small prosthetic pieces and bald caps

This course is fast paced, creative and delivered to strict time scale. You will need to be highly motivated and be able to work positively as a member of a team and independently. Full attendance is essential for a successful completion of the course. This is an advanced qualification and requires students to have some knowledge of make up, it is essential for applicants to have a level 2 make up qualification or equivalent. For our Level 2 qualification, please refer back to the hair and beauty section.

This course is Advanced Learner Loan eligible, which can fully cover the course fee. The fee for this course is £3,345 for the academic year 15/16.

At The City of Liverpool College you will undertake a personalised Study Programme, which will help you to achieve your ambitions and career goals.

All of our Study Programmes are designed to help you to develop your skills and widen your college experience.

What you should expect from your Study Programme:

  • A substantial qualification e.g. GCSE, A level or vocational equivalent
  • Meaningful work experience
  • Help to achieve GCSE English and maths at grades A*-C if you do not already have them
  • Practical activities that help your personal development including study skills, enrichment activities, employability training and classes in personal and social skills to get you ready for further education or employment.
  • Support to enable you to progress to the next level of study or employment

English and Maths

English and Maths skills are vital for employment and to secure a place on courses at a higher level, including university.

We have a team of tutors who will work with you to achieve these essential qualifications and enable you to apply these skills in your day to day activities and work.

Since September 2013 any young person who does not achieve their GCSE in English language and mathematics at grade C or above will have to continue their studies at college. Students who have a grade D in either subject must study these subjects at GCSE level.
