Photography and Imaging Level 3 Extended Diploma

Advanced Learner Loan Eligible

The Level 3 Extended Diploma Photography is a direct progression from Level 3 90 Credit Diploma Photography and will take a further year to complete. It aims to provide students with the opportunity to build and develop skills in photography, create a varied portfolio of quality work and acquire a body of transferable skills to successfully prepare them for Higher Education, apprenticeships and / or employment within the creative industries.

This course comprises 17 units (9 having been completed at Level 3 90 Credit Diploma). Students are given the opportunity to study a wide range of photographic genres such as studio, location, fashion, portraiture, conceptual, commercial, fine art and experimental whilst gaining an understanding of all technical aspects of photography. Students will also study in our fully equipped darkrooms and complete an exploration into film photography.

Students will be introduced to Idea Generation, Project Management, Professional Networking, Self-Employment, Academic Writing (in preparation for HE) and be given direct links with local businesses to support further development of their portfolios.

During the 2nd year students are fully supported with UCAS applications, apprenticeship applications and completion of CVs to prepare them for future employment.

Work experience is a welcomed aspect to the course and due to our excellent industry links our students have accessed a range of work experience including a range of event photography, fashion, charity, commercial and a substantial amount of music events such as Sound City, Smithdown Road Festival, and music venues across the city. The second year provides individually tailored work experience opportunities with the focus on the area of photography each student wishes to pursue.

Educational visits are a popular addition to our curriculum and, along with regular local location photography excursions, students have enjoyed photography workshops in Paris, London, Manchester and Dublin.

Our students benefit from:

- Industry specialised lecturers.

- Industry focused assignment briefs.

- Use of fully equipped darkrooms, studios and Mac suites.

- A varied range of relevant, contemporary work experience.

- Ongoing feedback from tutors throughout the course.

- Guest Lectures from respected freelancers within the photography, design and art industries.

- A city centre location.

“I chose this course because the opportunities for students within the photography department are endless. When attending the Open Event, the staff and students were so eager to welcome you to the college, it made me want to start straightaway! At my interview I felt so excited for the future and intrigued as to how the course would benefit me. I’ve almost completed my Level 3 Extended Diploma course and I am about to progress onto HE Photography. I know that I made the right decision to study here, it has helped shape the person I am today. Not only has the course taught me how to be a proficient photographer, it has also boosted my confidence and helped me gain transferable skills such as how to communicate effectively and work well within a team, which are positive additions to any CV.”
