Dental Technology, Foundation

Degree (FdSc)

This course develops the theoretical and practical knowledge of each student through set programmes within the department. Students will study all aspects of dental technology, to include practical skills in crown and bridge, partial prostheics, orthodontis, complete prosthodontics and will study Dental Materials Science, health and safety within the dental profession, dental ethics, Dental Anatomy and Physiology. Students will be employed full time in commercial dental laboratories or Dental Hospitals and will gain credit work carried out in the workplace.

Skills and Knowledge Developed: The course will give students experience in a broad range of disciplines within the laboratory. It will enhance employment opportunities and allow progression to further study on relevant degrees. Students will also experience workshops from dental manufacturers to develop further understanding of dental materials development and innovations such as CAD/CAM and dental implants.

Special Features: Once completed the course will allow students to register as a Dental Technician with the General Dental Council (GDC).

Teaching Methods: The knowledge and skills acquired on the programme will link directly to the vocational context and will diversify into a range of skills required by the Dental Technology Industry. Teaching and Learning methods will include formal lectures and seminars which will underpin the practical work completed on the .Practical modules will take place in the teaching laboratory with further sessions being occasionally held at the partner University, tutor support and guidance and extra independent learning sessions will be timetabled to allow access to the specialist equipment and resources.

Assessment Methods: The programme is assessed through end of unit exams and the submission of coursework which may comprise any of the following written essays, reports and seen exams, a series of project based practical assessments and a final case study project completed in the workplace. Formative feedback will support student progression in both written work and technical outcomes. The programme allows 120 credits at each level.
