Student Financial Support for Higher Education 2018/2019

There’s lots of financial help available; loans (which do have to be paid back) and bursaries (that don’t). Some of the student finance you can get depends on your household income — that is, the income of your parents or your husband, wife or partner.

Universities and colleges can charge up to £9,250 a year for full-time courses. You can get a Tuition Fee Loan to cover tuition fees. This has to be paid back but not until you finish or leave your course and your income is over £25,000 a year.

Living Costs

Maintenance Loan

The amount of Maintenance Loan you can get depends on your household income and where you live and study. The basic rate of Maintenance Loan (65% of the maximum rate) doesn’t depend on your household income but the remaining 35% does. You have to pay it back but not until you finish or leave your course and your income is over £25,000 a year.

Additional Grants

There’s also extra help available for students with a disability, mental-health condition or specific learning difficulty or students who have children or an adult who depends on them financially. For more information on this extra help take a look at our quick guides on Disabled Students’ Allowances and Dependants’ Grants available at www.thestudentroom.co.uk/studentfinance

How to Apply

When the time comes to apply, the quickest and easiest way to do it is online at www.gov.uk/studentfinance. You should apply as early as possible to make sure you get your money sorted out in time for the start of your course.

Student Loan Repayment

Repayments will be taken off your salary and the amount you repay each month is based on your income, not what you borrowed!

For more information on repayments, go to www.studentloanrepayment.co.uk

The City of Liverpool College Higher Education Hardship Fund and Learning Support fund 2018/2019

Eligibility: Higher education students who are experiencing severe financial difficulty or unforeseen circumstances with financial implications can apply for support. Applications will be considered on an individual basis and will be income assessed.

Cash payment of a maximum £1,000 for FT students or £500 for PT students may be granted.

Higher Education equipment and learning resource fund is set for internally progressing students. It is aimed at supporting students to obtain IT and other learning equipment, books and other essential learning resources.
