Electrical/Electronic Engineering (Top Up), Higher National

Diploma, HND. FULL TIME ONLY

The purpose of the BTEC Higher National in Engineering is to develop students as professional, self-reflecting individuals who are able to meet the demands of employers in the rapidly evolving engineering sector and adapt to a constantly changing world. The qualifications also aim to widen access to higher education and enhance the career prospects of those who undertake them.

The HND in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (Top Up) provides an opportunity to extend an existing HNC qualification to a higher level with study of more in depth specialist units.

It is a specialist work-related programme of study that covers the key knowledge, understanding and practical skills required in the electrical and electronic engineering sector and also offers particular specialist emphasis through the choice of specialist units such as: digital and analogue devices, electrical and electronic principles, microcontrollers, instrumentation and control, electronic principles, research project, telecommunication principles, and control systems and automation.

Skills and Knowledge Developed:

Students need both good qualifications and employability skills to enhance their career prospects and personal development. The Higher National Certificate in engineering embed throughout the programme, the development of key skills, attributes and strengths required by 21st century employers.

● Interpersonal skills: effective communication and articulation of information, working collaboratively, negotiating and influencing, self-presentation.

Students can also benefit from opportunities for deeper learning, where they are able to make connections between units and select areas of interest for detailed study. In this way, the Higher National in Engineering provides a vocational context in which students can develop the knowledge and academic study skills required for particular degree courses and progression to university, including:

● Active research skills
