Construction and the Built Environment,

Higher National Certificate (HNC)

A BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate is an engaging programme aimed at students who are working in a technical or supervisory position and are looking to enhance their career in the Construction, Architecture or Civil Engineering industry. The overall aim of the programme is to develop knowledge, understanding and intellectual skills appropriate t a variety of roles within the construction industry. The programme will address the science and technology of modern construction methods, project management and CADD providing students with the opportunity to pursue a variety of career options within the sector. From September 2017, a specialised Surveying pathway will also be available. This is a part-time course which runs over two evenings a week for two years.

The course is designed to develop the knowledge and understanding of:

- Design Principles and Application

- Science and Materials

- Health, Safety and Welfare

- Construction and Maintenance of Buildings

- Technology of Complex Buildings

- Project Management

- Computer Aided Design

* Modules are flexible and may change to meet student demand.

The course features a group project which develops interpersonal skills, management skills and problem solving.

The course is delivered through a blend of lectures, seminars, tutorials, independent study and industry guest speakers.

The course is assessed through a blend of assignments, practical tasks and job knowledge tasks. Each subject is awarded a Pass, Merit or Distinction and the combined marks produce the final overall grade of Pass, Merit or Distinction for the course as a whole.

Completion of this course provides a number of options in both education and employment and sets you on your way to becoming a professional within the built environment.

In employment, the course prepares you for careers in architecture, construction management, building surveying, quantity surveying, building control, estate management, and many others.

In education, students who complete the HNC can subsequently complete additional units to convert their HNC into a Level 5 Foundation Degree in Construction. Students can then progress on to further study at Degree level at an appropriate University.
