
Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Higher
National Certificate (HNC)
The HNC in Electrical and Electronic Engineering provides a specialist work-related programme of study that covers the key knowledge, understanding and practical skills required in the electrical and electronic engineering sector and also offers particular specialist emphasis through the choice of specialist units such as: engineering science, analytical methods for engineering, project design and implementation, programmable logic controllers, electrical power, instrumentation and control principles, electronic principles, digital and analogue devices and circuits, quality assurance and management, business management techniques for engineers.
Skills and Knowledge Developed:
• Provide preparation for a range of technical and management careers in engineering
• Provide specialised studies which are directly relevant to individual vocations and professions in which students are currently working or in which they intend to seek employment
• Enable students to make an immediate contribution in employment
• Provide flexibility, knowledge, skills and motivation as a basis for progression to graduate and postgraduate studies
• Develop the range of skills and techniques, personal qualities and attitudes which are essential for successful performance in working life.
Special Features: The college has up-to-date equipment and software to complement or prepare students for work in engineering industries. Released students are encouraged to complete a work based project.
Where appropriate, the teaching is practically based.
Teaching Methods: The teaching and learning strategies used to promote these skills are developed through the programme outlined above.
Analysis and problem solving skills are developed through coursework and laboratory/workshop activities.
Practical, research and design skills are developed through coursework, assignments and laboratory/workshop activities.
Assessment Methods: The assessment of this is through the practical activities, activity write-ups, coursework reports and project reports and presentations

A key progression path for BTEC HNC learners is onto an HND or a degree programme, depending on the match of the BTEC Higher National units to the degree programme in question.
BTEC Higher National Certificate in Electrical and Electronic Engineering
This is a level 4 qualification in the Framework for Higher Education Qualifications (FHEQ)
- A BTEC Level 3 qualification in Engineering
- A GCE Advanced Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or adequate performance in more than one GCE subject. This profile is likely to be supported by GCSE grades at A* to C (or equivalent)
- Other related Level 3 qualifications
- An Access to Higher Education Certificate awarded by an approved further education institution
- Related work experience
- An international equivalent of the above.
Part-Time : the course runs during the day for 6.5 hours per week 36 weeks of the year and will take 2 years to complete.
Full time : the course runs during the day for up to 14 hours per week 36 weeks of the year and will take 1 year to complete.

2018/19 - HNC/HND Year 1 £6129, HND Year 2 £5950 (P/T £3064.50 Year 1, £2975 Year 2)
