sector VRQ Level 1
The Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector for 16-18s is a great way to start your career. The course enables you to develop skills and confidence to progress in college and into work. You will develop a wide range of skills in hairdressing or beauty as well as gaining qualifications in English and Maths.

Unit 102 Presenting a professional image in a salon
Unit 113 Follow health and safety in the salon
Unit 114 Salon reception duties
Unit 115 Working with others in the hair and beauty sector
Unit 112 Create a hair and beauty image
Unit 003 Shampoo and Conditioning
Unit 105 Plaiting and twisting hair
Unit 111 Colour hair using temporary colour
Unit 215 The Art of dressing hair
Unit 006 Skin care
Unit 106 Basic make-up application
Unit 107 Themed face painting
Unit 109 Providing basic manicure treatment
You will have a personal tutor and a weekly tutorial. You will also have the opportunity to work alongside a Level 2 and 3 student in the college’s commercial salon to help you gain experience.
In addition to this, you will complete a portfolio of evidence which supports your practical expertise and shows that you understand the theoretical concepts behind the practical tasks that you are able to carry out.
Our assessments take place on each other, friends, family or mannequin heads.

Personal and Social Development
Basic Maths and English
This course is for 16-18 year olds. You do not need to have any formal qualifications in Hairdressing, but you will need to show that you have an interest in the area.
You will need Maths and English at Entry Level 3 or 3 GCSE's at grade E (to include a Maths and English at grade E).
It is essential that all students can demonstrate an appropriate level on interpersonal skills as this is a customer
focused industry.
The course runs in the day full time 36 weeks per year and will take one year to complete. The course may involve
working one late night.

All of our Study Programmes are designed to help you to develop your skills and widen your college experience.
What you should expect from your Study Programme:
- A substantial qualification e.g. GCSE, A level or vocational equivalent
- Meaningful work experience
- Help to achieve GCSE English and maths at grades A*-C if you do not already have them
- Practical activities that help your personal development including study skills, enrichment activities, employability training and classes in personal and social skills to get you ready for further education or employment.
- Support to enable you to progress to the next level of study or employment

English and Maths skills are vital for employment and to secure a place on courses at a higher level, including university.
We have a team of tutors who will work with you to achieve these essential qualifications and enable you to apply these skills in your day to day activities and work.
Since September 2013 any young person who does not achieve their GCSE in English language and mathematics at grade C or above will have to continue their studies at college. Students who have a grade D in either subject must study these subjects at GCSE level.
