Vacancy Description   

We are looking to recruit an apprentice chef who is passionate about a career in the industry to join our team of professional chefs. Working with the head chef and the team, we need an apprentice chef to help prepare and cook our varied menu that uses local fresh ingredients. We serve Breakfasts, Starters, Sundries, various main courses, burgers, handmade pies, delicious deserts and our famous Sunday Roast.

We also are always open to new ideas and dishes to be included on our menus. You will gain great experience here whilst also attending The City of Liverpool College as part of an apprenticeship programme.

We are specifically looking for a candidate who has the desire to pursue a career in the catering and hospitality industry. If you have visions of being a head chef, this could be the opportunity you have been waiting for.

We have a vacancy for an apprentice chef at newly designed Gastro Pub in Liverpool’s popular Lark Lane area. We use locally sourced, fresh ingredients and the main duties and responsibilities for our apprentice commis chef are:

  • Maintain health, hygiene and safety when storing and preparing food

  • Prepare basic vegetable dishes

  • Prepare basic meat and poultry dishes

  • Prepare pasta dishes

  • Prepare basic soups

  • Prepare basic fish dishes

  • Prepare different desserts

  • Set up and close kitchen

  • Take directions and guidance from supervisors and managers.

  • Help set up and close down the kitchens

  • Understand dietary requirements and allergens

Employer Description

Well made, no nonsense neighbourhood hangout, bar & grill. Serving up cask ales, lager, wine, cocktails and sumptuous pub grub. The Lodge has DJs late on weekends, open mic nights, quizzes, live music and is also a great place to watch live sports.

Regular CASK ALE favorites include : Hawkshead, Timothy Taylor, Theakston’s and Deuchars.

Food is served daily until 9pm and 8pm on Sundays.

QUIZ NIGHT Every Wednesday From 9:30pm

LIVE MUSIC Every Sunday From 6:30pm

Skills Required

  • Ideally some previous experience in food preparation
  • Able to work in a food preparation environment

Qualifications Required  

Ideally a Level 1 catering/hospitality qualification and a minimum of Entry Level 3 in Maths and English but a real passion and interest in cooking is the key to this role.


Training to be Provided

NVQ Level 2 or equivalent in Hospitality Services (Food Preparation) – one day per week at Duke Street site in Liverpool city centre plus Functional Skills in English and Maths if required.


Expected Duration

18 Months


Future Prospects   

The prospect of a full-time role is here on successful completion of your apprenticeship programme.


Working Week

Minimum 35 hours per week

Shifts range between the hours of 10am and 8:30pm.

You will also be expected to attend college 1 day per week


Other Important Information/Reality Check

Working in the catering industry requires dedication, commitment, and hard work, many of the hours are anti-social and involve late finishes, so suitable travel arrangements need to be considered.

Working in an intimate kitchen in close proximity with other chefs, working under pressure, and long days standing.

Training on the Apprenticeships Programme for 16 to 18 year olds is a priority and fully-funded by the Government for non-levy paying employers. Training for Apprenticeships for those over this age is part funded, with employers expected to make a part or full contribution.
