What to expect from the course

What does this qualification cover?

This course is perfect for you, if you would like to learn Air Con and Refrigeration around your day to day life. The training involves planning, preparing and safely carrying out work activities in air-con and refrigeration processes, products and installation. The knowledge you’ll gain will be transferrable across refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pumping.

You'll learn to carry out work on a variety of applications essential for key UK business activities such as food production, product distribution, retail storage and display, transport and office climate control, manufacturing processes (e.g. petrochemical, pharmaceutical), IT/Datacentres and medical/healthcare services temperature and environmental control.

Key activities are: the design, installation, routine maintenance, reactive service, commissioning and de-commissioning of Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heat Pump systems. You’ll develop a thorough understanding of the engineering principles of thermodynamics and the vapour compression cycle in order to perform operations.

Once qualified as a fully competent technician, you’ll be able to work without immediate supervision, liaising effectively with other trades and with end users.

Who is it suitable for?

This course is perfect for you if you’re interested in entering the aircon/refrigeration trade, or if you are already in the trade but don’t yet have your level 3 qualification. The course is fully funded for all adults aged 19 and above who don’t already have a level 3 qualification. The course can be studied alongside other commitments, with night classes running on Mondays and Thursdays, 6pm to 9pm.

It will be assessed by your Tutor using a portfolio of evidence.

Duke Street campus is also home to the College’s Academy Restaurant. Often referred to by it’s customers as Liverpool’s hidden gem, the restaurant serves top class cuisine, at highly competitive prices. Food is expertly prepared by professional chef/tutors and young chefs in training and offers students a range of discounts at different times of the year.

When you become a student of the College you’ll receive full access to Microsoft Office 365. This allows you to install the software on your own computer and other devices at home, completely free of charge.

Onsite Sports Facilities/Fitness Suite

The college has excellent sports and fitness facilities at its Roscoe Street campus. Students pay a one-off membership fee for all year round usage of weekly supervised gym sessions, as well as access to a number of sporting clubs and events.


Career pathways

Once you’ve completed the course, you’ll be perfectly placed to work in industry as a fully qualified air conditioning and heat pump engineer. Qualified technicians are able to work without immediate supervision, liaising effectively with other trades and with end users.

Entry Requirements

No previous experience is necessary, making this an ideal opportunity to retrain. Learners aged 19 years or above who do not already have a level 3 qualification will be able to gain full funding for the course. If you do have an existing level 3 qualification, then we will discuss other ways for you to fund the course.

Fees

If you are 16-18 years old at the start of your course, studying at The City of Liverpool College is free. If you are aged between 19 or over and don’t have 2 A-Levels (or equivalent), you won't have to pay any fees for this course.

19 years old or over and have 2 A-Levels (or equivalent) at the start of the course? Fees are payable, but you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover the cost of your course.
