Want to get started in the hospitality industry? You might want to work as a chef, kitchen assistant or waiter/ress if so the introductory Certificate is designed for you.
A Certificate in Hospitality is for anyone new to hospitality work. You probably won't have any experience. You might still be at school.
You don't need a job or work placement to take these qualifications - but if you have one you can often learn on the job.
This Culinary Skills qualification will enable you to develop skills which can lead to you becoming a chef and could progress you to a more senior chef's role. You will gain a high standard of cookery skills and patisserie skills, and you will also learn other workplace essentials in food safety and working with others. The course is aimed at 16-18 year olds or up to age 24 if you have an EHCP.
Whilst on your course you will also undertake 20 hours of work experience within a variety of placements within the city organised by our work experience team, this will give you the confidence required to actually see and feel what this industry has to offer, we work alongside many of the city’s top venues such as the Art School, Liverpool Football Club, Titanic Hotel and the Pullman Hotel plus many others.
Depending on GCSE results the study programme could either include functional skills (Maths & English) or GCSE (Maths & English) and any underpinning knowledge required for the qualification.
The course covers skills in:
- Food safety
- Health and safety in catering
- Healthier foods
- Costs and menu planning
- Preparing and cooking different foods
For these qualifications you will complete practical demonstrations and practical assessments, written assignments and short answer theory questions. On this course, students will learn the fundamental professional culinary skills required to become a chef in this current dynamic industry.
There will be a requirement to purchase uniform and knives which will be further explained at interview.

You will ideally be 16-18 years old.
Minimum entry requirements are good basic skills in English as you will be expected to read recipe sheets and apply simple maths to weigh and measure ingredients, it would be desirable to have a reasonable level of skill in using computers and Microsoft Word, as great resources will be available for you to develop and enhance your skills in this area.
You will also be invited to interview. At interview we expect you to be enthusiastic and passionate about food. Please bring any GCSE results or predicted grades, plus any other qualifications you might have gained.
