The Level 1 Culinary Skills qualification will suit you if you are new to the industry and want to gain a good basic understanding of catering work, enough to succeed in a job or move on to further study.
This Culinary Skills qualification will enable you to develop skills which can lead to you becoming a chef and could progress you to a more senior chef's role. You will gain a high standard of cookery skills and patisserie skills, and you will also learn other workplace essentials in food safety and working with others. The Culinary Skills qualification is for anyone who works or wants to work as a chef in the catering and hospitality sector. The course is aimed at 16-18 year olds.
Students aged 16-18 will form a study programme which will also include the VRQ Level 1 Certificate in Professional Food and Beverage Service qualification.
Depending on GCSE results the study programme could either include functional skills (Maths & English) or GCSE (Maths & English) and any underpinning knowledge required for the qualification.
In this course, students cover the fundamental professional culinary skills required to become a chef in the current, dynamic industry.
The course covers topics such as:
- Food safety
- Health and safety in catering
- Healthier foods
- Costs and menu planning
- Preparing and cooking different foods
These qualifications are assessed by using assignments, practical tasks, exams and or online tests.
For these qualifications you will complete practical demonstrations/synoptic exams, assignments and take a multiple choice examination. On this course, students will learn the fundamental professional culinary skills required to become a chef in this current dynamic industry.
There will be a requirement to purchase uniform and knives which will be further explained at interview.

You will ideally be 16-18 years old.
Minimum entry requirements are GCSE grades F-G or above in English and Maths, or achievement of Entry 3 in the college online initial assessment tests in English and Maths. It is desirable to have a reasonable level of ICT.
You will also be subject to interview. At interview we expect you to be enthusiastic and passionate about food. Please bring any GCSE results or predicted grades, plus any other qualifications you might have gained.
