What to expect from the course

Want to get started in the hospitality industry? You might want to work as a chef, kitchen assistant or waiter/ress; If so, the introductory Certificate is designed for you.

An NVQ Certificate in Hospitality Services qualification is for anyone new to hospitality work. You probably won't have any experience. You might still be at school.

You don't need a job or a work placement to take these qualifications - but if you have one you can often learn on the job.

To gain an NVQ, you need to show you've got a particular set of skills. You will work with your assessor to review your current skills and find the best way to gain new ones - perhaps by trying new things at work, or by studying.

NVQs are assessed in college or in a simulated workplace. For each unit your assessor watches and asks questions as you perform a task, or looks at a portfolio of work that you've built as formal evidence of your learning. Then they confirm you've got the skills to do the job well.

Whilst on your course you will also undertake 20 hours of work experience within a variety of placements within the city organised by our work experience team, this will give you the confidence required to actually see and feel what this industry has to offer, we work alongside many of the city’s top venues such as the Art School, Liverpool Football Club, Titanic Hotel and the Pullman Hotel plus many others.

We have exciting competitions that you can be part of, these will be internal and external national competitions, many of our students have gone on to win in heats of competitions such as ‘North West Young Chef of the Year’ some have gone on to appear on ‘Great British Menu’ representing the North West. So as you can see this is not just a career choice it’s a life skill that will stick with you forever and you will develop to be the best chef and pastry chef in the industry.

Academy Bakery

The Academy Bakery is located on the Duke Street campus, producing a range of first class baked goods daily. These include artisan breads, patisserie and biscuits, as well as special occasion/novelty cakes by award-winning master-bakers. Students are offered a range of discounts throughout the year.

Academy Hair and Beauty Salons

Duke Street is also home to The Academy Hair and Beauty salons. They offer generous student discounts on a wide range of hair and beauty treatments, at a fraction of high-street prices. These include styling, cutting, perming, highlights, facials, manicures, electrolysis and traditional and homeopathic massage.

Academy Restaurant

Duke Street campus is also home to the College’s Academy Restaurant. Often referred to by it’s customers as Liverpool’s hidden gem, the restaurant serves top class cuisine, at highly competitive prices. Food is expertly prepared by professional chef/tutors and young chefs in training and offers students a range of discounts at different times of the year.

Microsoft Office 365 - Free

When you become a student of the College you’ll receive full access to Microsoft Office 365. This allows you to install the software on your own computer and other devices at home, completely free of charge.

Onsite Sports Facilities/Fitness Suite

The college has excellent sports and fitness facilities at its Roscoe Street campus. Students pay a one-off membership fee for all year round usage of weekly supervised gym sessions, as well as access to a number of sporting clubs and events.

After earning your certificate you can move on to a whole range of Level 2 qualifications, for example:

Entry Requirements

The following is a guide as to what you might be expected to achieve to gain entry onto the course.

You should hold GCSE grades 1-2 or E-G equivalent, including Foundation Awards and Entry Level Certificates.
Good attendance will be vitally important towards your achievement and progression onto higher level courses.

If you are 16-18 years old at the start of your course, studying at The City of Liverpool College is free. If you are aged between 19-23 and don’t already hold a qualification equivalent to 5 GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above, and you need to study at Entry or Level 1 to progress to Level 2, you won't have to pay any fees for this course.
