Course information

The BTEC Level 2 First Diploma in Photography is a practical vocational course. It is intended for applicants who have an interest in digital photography. It aims to build and develop skills in photography and imaging and to enable students to create a portfolio of quality work in photography & imaging at Level 2.
This route is for applicants who have an interest in studying a one year course programme at Level 2 and also allow students to progress onto the Level 3 Extended Diploma for application to University; it can also be used as a foundation for application to Level 3 in related vocational areas – Graphic Design, Multi Media etc.
The delivery of the programme is through: Project assignment work, Live assignment briefs, Practical demonstrations, Workshops , Mini tasks, Group critiques, Presentations, Contextual studies Historical studies and Theory and Research.
You will also be expected to work independently and engage in group tasks within realistic time constraints in order to develop your skills. You will also benefit from working in well equipped specialist facilities.
The course programme is coordinated to ensure quality application in teaching and learning and promotes equality and diversity.
This is a one year course programme, consisting of 7 Assignment Projects and 2 Exams.
Assignments cover a broad range of Photography & Imaging applications:
• Practical
• Digital
• Location work
• Contextual
• Health & Safety
Weekly Reviews, Group & Individual Tutorials supplement the year course of study.
Externally set assignments have been introduced to provide independent evidence of learning and progression along side the predominantly portfolio-based assessment.
Students will be required to purchase and provide programme course materials for their study and progression and assessment support to include: - practical development, final prints, portfolio presentation materials and research files.
Students must have access to a digital camera [dSLR]
If you do not have access to a digital camera and intend to buy one for the course of study, please delay purchase until you successfully enrol and the programme tutor will advise you on a suitable purchase within the initial weeks of study.
Students without a grade C in GCSE English and maths will also have the opportunity to gain a qualification in these subjects.

On successful completion you will receive a full Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Photography & Imaging.
You MUST study all modules to achieve a full Certificate at Level 2

You will also have the opportunity to develop your literacy and numeracy skills up to level 2.

This course leads to...

Diploma in Photography or other related level 3 Diplomas eg Multimedia, Games Development, Media - Moving Image, Graphic Design, Fashion and Clothing.

Entry Requirements

Students need 1 GCSE at C or above and English at level 1 - GCSE D-E standard, maths entry 3 - GCSE F-G standard.

You will also need evidence of an active interest and involvement in photography.
Applicants will need to bring a printed portfolio of their own photography to an interview.
