What to expect from the course

This qualification will benefit you if you want to work in front of house within a hospitality environment.

The qualification covers all aspects of food and beverage service, it will deliver the key skills required to ensure you will have a thorough understanding of the role and expectations that any future employer will expect of you.

You’ll learn essential skills in food service, handling payments, bookings, serving hot and cold beverages, food safety, bar service and menu design.

On this course you will do enrichment activities, visit hotels, have the opportunity to develop skills ready for Level 2 course.

On successful completion of this qualification it is recommended you progress on to the Level 2 Diploma in Professional Food and Beverage Service.

Whilst on the course you will participate in work experience and be offered a wide range of enrichment opportunities for you to develop your skills further, previously we have had Liverpool Football Club showcasing both their kitchen and front of house teams to our students, we also have a visitor economy week were our front of house students have visited establishments around the city and have had guided tours of the Pullman Hotel and Titanic Hotel, we have even participated in a hotel takeover. Work experience is a fundamental part of the course and these work place skills will develop your skills and give you the confidence and skills to gain employment.

Academy Bakery

The Academy Bakery is located on the Duke Street campus, producing a range of first class baked goods daily. These include artisan breads, patisserie and biscuits, as well as special occasion/novelty cakes by award-winning master-bakers. Students are offered a range of discounts throughout the year.

Academy Hair and Beauty Salons

Duke Street is also home to The Academy Hair and Beauty salons. They offer generous student discounts on a wide range of hair and beauty treatments, at a fraction of high-street prices. These include styling, cutting, perming, highlights, facials, manicures, electrolysis and traditional and homeopathic massage.

Academy Restaurant

Duke Street campus is also home to the College’s Academy Restaurant. Often referred to by it’s customers as Liverpool’s hidden gem, the restaurant serves top class cuisine, at highly competitive prices. Food is expertly prepared by professional chef/tutors and young chefs in training and offers students a range of discounts at different times of the year.

When you become a student of the College you’ll receive full access to Microsoft Office 365. This allows you to install the software on your own computer and other devices at home, completely free of charge.

The college has excellent sports and fitness facilities at its Roscoe Street campus. Students pay a one-off membership fee for all year round usage of weekly supervised gym sessions, as well as access to a number of sporting clubs and events.

Entry Requirements

This course is suitable for 16-18 year olds.

Minimum entry requirements are good basic skills in English as you will be expected to take food orders, read wine labels and apply simple maths to calculate bills etc.

It would be desirable to have a reasonable skill level of using computers and word processing as great resources will be available for you to develop and enhance your skills in this area.

If you are 16-18 years old at the start of your course, studying at The City of Liverpool College is free. If you are aged between 19-23 and don’t already hold a qualification equivalent to 5 GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above, and you need to study at Entry or Level 1 to progress to Level 2, you won't have to pay any fees for this course.
