HE Fees, Funding and Financial Support – 2023/24

Please note: The information below regarding Student Loans is for full- and part-time courses in Higher Education only and applies to HE students taking up a place at College in academic year 2023/24.

There is lots of financial help available to support you whilst studying on a higher education programme – including loans, which have to be paid back, and bursaries that don’t. Certain student finance available depends on your household income; that is, the income of your parents or your husband, wife or partner.

Universities and colleges can charge up to £9,250 tuition fees for each year of a full-time course.

To learn more about the financial support available, click on a heading below.

TUITION FEE LOAN

You can get a Tuition Fee Loan to cover tuition fees. This has to be paid back, but not until the April after you finish or leave your course and your income is over £25,000 a year. Tuition fees are paid directly to the College in three instalments.

The City of Liverpool College University Centre’s tuition fees are set as follows:

  • Full time fees: these range from £7,400 to £8,400 per year.
  • Part time fees: these range from £3,698 to £5,600 per year.

Note: course fees stated are for each year of study. Fees for the second or third year of a foundation/honours degree programme may be subject to adjustment in line with inflation.

MAINTENANCE LOAN

Maintenance loans replace maintenance/special support grants for new full time students.

  • The maximum maintenance support for students from low-income households living away from home and studying outside London will be £9,978 a year.
  • The maximum maintenance support for new students entitled to benefits living away from home and studying outside London will be £11,374 a year.
  • Maintenance loans replace special support grants for new full-time students who are entitled to welfare benefits.

You have to pay it back but not until you finish or leave your course and your income is over £25,000 a year.

CHILDCARE SUPPORT

If you are studying on a HE course, you may be able to apply for a Government loan to help pay for tuition and living costs. You can also apply for a Childcare Grant to help towards your childcare costs.  The grant is on top of your other student finance and does not have to be paid back.  You can use the Arts Centre nursery or if you prefer, find a setting of your choice for your child.

Further details about eligibility, visit: https://www.gov.uk/childcare-grant

HOW TO APPLY

When the time comes to apply, the quickest and easiest way is online at www.gov.uk/studentfinance

You should apply as early as possible once the service opens in early 2023, to make sure your money is sorted out in time for the start of your course.

STUDENT LOAN REPAYMENT

As from academic year 2023/24, loan repayment policies for undergraduate students in England will be changing and key facts about how repayments will work include:

  • You wont have to make repayments until your income is over a set threshold, which will be 25,000 a year until April 2027
  • From April 2027, the threshold is set to rise annually with inflation (RPI)
  • If you study a full-time course, you will be due to start repaying from April after completing your course or leaving/withdrawing from higher education
  • A 2026 graduate who starts a job with a salary of £28,000 a year, would expect to pay around £17 per month over financial year 2027-28
  • If your income drops below the threshold, your repayments will stop and any outstanding balance will be written off 40 years after entering repayment
