College students scoop kin-ball trophy at inter-city tournament

Learners from The City of Liverpool College arranged an inter-city Kin-ball tournament recently for students with learning disabilities, and walked away with the champion’s trophy.

The students linked up with Stockport-based Cando Leonard Cheshire charity to organise a community-based project around physical, well being, yoga, meditation and nutrition, as part of their course: Entry 3 Pathways certificate in Using Employability Skills.

The winning team, whose ages ranged from 17-21, took part in a pre-tournament training session with a qualified kin-ball coach, alongside teams from Yorkshire and the Greater Manchester area. The final was followed by a tasting session for players and their families, which was hosted by the victors, who’d created a range of nutritious smoothies especially for the occasion.

Course tutor Gill McDonough said: “The students enjoyed the whole experience of travelling to another city and meeting learners from across the region. They really embraced what it means to work as part of a team and gained other important qualities that will help them to move on for their future goals.”

The event demonstrated a wide range of skills that learners on College’s Pathways programmes acquire, including communication, decision making, problem solving and working and supporting each other as part of a team.
