What to expect from the course

The UAL Level 3 is an exciting programme which provides you with the opportunity to develop skills achieved at Level 2 and GCSE with a view to progression on to University or employment in the Creative industries.

Year One: The Diploma consists of one unit called 'Diagnostic Investigation in Art & Design' which develop your practical skills base, whilst underpinning their creativity with professional qualities required. These include exploration of the design process, a knowledge of art history, critical thinking and work experience. You'll demonstrate the culmination of your learning by responding to a creative brief, which is set and marked by UAL Awarding Body.

Specialist disciplines covered in the first year include fine art painting and sculpture, graphic illustration, photography, textiles, printmaking, and 3D design. The Diploma is designed to help you to be experimental and to support you in choosing a direction on which to focus in the second year Extended Diploma.

Year Two: Extended Diploma is where you'll develop a more individual portfolio based on your chosen progression route. Application to university and work placements are supported through website building, producing a freelance portfolio, visits to universities and by developing networks in local industries.

This course provides you with an understanding of a range of art and design disciplines making use of a variety of specialist workshops. You will have the opportunity to work on live project briefs and exhibit your work at external venues as part of our end of year shows. You will explore the context of photography in all specialisms in the setting up an exhibition, engaging with audience participation and developing individual to develop their own style of work. You are expected to take part in contemporary practice to enable you to explore and develop your own visual language.

Students have progressed to Higher Education, Apprenticeships and employment in specialisms such as Fine Art, Ceramics, 3D Design, Architecture, Fashion, Interior Design, Textiles, Graphics and Illustration.
On the successful completion of Year One you will achieve a UAL Level 3 Applied General Diploma in Art & Design.
On the successful completion of both Year One and Year Two you will will achieve a UAL Level 3 Extended Applied General Diploma in Art & Design.

This course is Advanced Learning Loan eligible.

Duke Street is also home to The Academy Hair and Beauty salons. They offer generous student discounts on a wide range of hair and beauty treatments, at a fraction of high-street prices. Academy Restaurant

Duke Street campus is also home to the College’s Academy Restaurant. Often referred to by it’s customers as Liverpool’s hidden gem, the restaurant serves top class cuisine, at highly competitive prices. Food is expertly prepared by professional chef/tutors and young chefs in training and offers students a range of discounts at different times of the year.

When you become a student of the College you’ll receive full access to Microsoft Office 365. This allows you to install the software on your own computer and other devices at home, completely free of charge.

The college has excellent sports and fitness facilities at its Roscoe Street campus. Students pay a one-off membership fee for all year round usage of weekly supervised gym sessions, as well as access to a number of sporting clubs and events.

Entry Requirements

Designed for all learners with a 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above and/or a level 2 qualification at grade Merit or above. You must have at least one GCSE in Maths and/or English at grade 4 or above.

Llearners aged 19 and older with an outstanding portfolio of artwork will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Fees

If you are 16-18 years old at the start of your course, studying at The City of Liverpool College is free. If you are aged between 19-23 and don’t have 2 A-Levels (or equivalent), you won't have to pay any fees for this course.

24 years old or over or 19-23 and have 2 A-Levels (or equivalent) at the start of the course? Fees are payable, but you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover the cost of your course. Please note this is a two year programme that consists of two courses. Your fee status may change from one year to the next depending on age and circumstance at the start of the next course e.g. if you turn 19 before progressing to the next level, you may be required to pay fees as outlined above.
