Laying bricks, blocks and other types of building components in mortar to construct and repair walls, foundations, partitions, arches and other structures.
About the Role
Bricklayers lay bricks, blocks and other types of building components in mortar to construct and repair walls, foundations, partitions, arches and other structures. They might also refurbish brickwork and masonry on restoration projects. The range of sites and projects that bricklayers will work on include large commercial developments, new builds in housing, alterations, extensions and restorations. A bricklayer may work one-on-one or on larger jobs where their bricklaying group (gang) may work on a particular section of a building alongside other bricklaying gangs as well as other trades.
On-Programme Learning
Apprentices need to complete 20% off-the-job training during the on-programme phase of their apprenticeship.Specific rules govern this and it must take place in the apprentice’s contracted hours.
Knowledge
Apprentices will develop knowledge of how to set out and build brickwork, including complex arches and surrounding brickwork. They will understand the different types of materials, their uses and their value, as well as types of bonds and their uses.They will understand different eras, types of construction methods, insulation considerations, sustainability, facilities management, fire, moisture and air protection.
Skills
Apprentice Bricklayers will be able to determine quality and quantities of building material including mix ratios of mortar and concrete, as well as areas and volumes of materials and resources. They will adhere to relevant health and safety legislation, codes of practice and apply safe working practices. Apprentices will interpret drawings and specifications, and measure the work area and set out level first courses of bricks to a plan, including bonds for openings and the damp course.
Behaviours
Apprentices will develop their workplace behaviours, learning to work with others, build positive working relationships, interact with, and influence colleagues and will have working level contact with customers, suppliers and partners in their capacity as an individual contributor.Apprentices will develop strong oral and written communication skills, use their own initiative and take a structured approach to the prioritisation of tasks.Qualifications
On completion of this Apprenticeship, the apprentice will have satisfied the requirements to obtain a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Card at the appropriate level. As a result of achieving the Apprenticeship, there will be an entitlement to join the Federation of Master Builders’ continuous professional development (CPD) scheme for individual tradespeople. The City of Liverpool College will provide an Apprenticeship Training Manual for each student, access to C&G Smart Screen online learning resources, access to online EPA preparation tool personalised to the individual student and additional EPA pack and guidance. The College will also ensure that tuition for any additional Maths and English qualifications required will be provided to the level required for the standard.

Microsoft Office 365 - Free
When you become a student of the College you’ll receive full access to Microsoft Office 365. This allows you to install the software on your own computer and other devices at home, completely free of charge.
Onsite Sports Facilities/Fitness Suite
The college has excellent sports and fitness facilities at its Roscoe Street campus. Students pay a one-off membership fee for all year round usage of weekly supervised gym sessions, as well as access to a number of sporting clubs and events.

Entry Requirements
Will be determined by the employer - typicall y 5 GCSE's grade A-C, progression from L2 App renticeship, or ability to demonstrate the ap propriate knowledge, skills and competency le vels.
