What to expect from the course

The Foundation Diploma is made up of six units – some core units that everyone must take, plus some specialist units that allow you to study particular areas in more depth.

The units cover:

• The Business Environment
• Developing a Marketing Campaign
• Personal and Business Finance
• Events Management
• Recruitment and Selection
• Work Experience

There are various trips and activities throughout the programme allowing you to use real experiences to frame your work.
As part of the course you will undertake a week’s work experience in a business setting, take part in mock job interviews and CV preparation & also work in a team to organise a college event.

In year one, four of the units are assessed through project and assignment work. Two of the units are assessed through exams. All units are assessed and graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction, and an overall grade for the qualification will be awarded.

The Extended Diploma is made up of seven units – some core units that everyone must take, plus some further specialist units which enable you to develop your knowledge further.

• Principles of Management
• Business Decision Making
• Investigating Customer Service
• Pitching for a New Business
• Training and Development
• Market Research

The units provide an opportunity to study Marketing, Finance and Personnel subjects in more depth. In year two, five of the units are assessed through project and assignment work. With all the units we link your learning to real-life businesses. Two of the units are assessed through exams. All units are assessed and graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction, and an overall grade for the qualification will be awarded.

Qualifications

Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Business.
At the end of year one, you will then progress into year two to study the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business which is equivalent to a further one and a half A levels, therefore providing overall an equivalent of 3 A Levels.

Academy Bakery

The Academy Bakery is located on the Duke Street campus, producing a range of first class baked goods daily. These include artisan breads, patisserie and biscuits, as well as special occasion/novelty cakes by award-winning master-bakers. Students are offered a range of discounts throughout the year.

Academy Hair and Beauty Salons

Duke Street is also home to The Academy Hair and Beauty salons. They offer generous student discounts on a wide range of hair and beauty treatments, at a fraction of high-street prices. These include styling, cutting, perming, highlights, facials, manicures, electrolysis and traditional and homeopathic massage.

Academy Restaurant

Duke Street campus is also home to the College’s Academy Restaurant. Often referred to by it’s customers as Liverpool’s hidden gem, the restaurant serves top class cuisine, at highly competitive prices. Food is expertly prepared by professional chef/tutors and young chefs in training and offers students a range of discounts at different times of the year.

Microsoft Office 365 - Free

When you become a student of the College you’ll receive full access to Microsoft Office 365. This allows you to install the software on your own computer and other devices at home, completely free of charge.

Onsite Sports Facilities/Fitness Suite

The college has excellent sports and fitness facilities at its Roscoe Street campus. Students pay a one-off membership fee for all year round usage of weekly supervised gym sessions, as well as access to a number of sporting clubs and events.


Career pathways

If you complete the Foundation Diploma you can progress onto the Extended Diploma.

Due the practical nature you will have a wide range of future opportunities available to you. You could choose to go on to university to study a wide variety of related topics such as Business, Law or Accountancy, or alternatively you could enter the world of work and specialise in Marketing, Finance, Sales and Personnel sectors.

There are also opportunities to enter the world of work via an apprenticeship scheme with the college having links to many local employers.

Entry Requirements

Our entry requirements are a minimum of 5x Grade C/Level 4 including either Maths or English Language at Level 4 or above.

Fees

If you are 16-18 years old at the start of your course, studying at The City of Liverpool College is free. If you are aged between 19 or over and don’t have 2 A-Levels (or equivalent), you won't have to pay any fees for this course.

19 years old or over and have 2 A-Levels (or equivalent) at the start of the course? Fees are payable, but you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover the cost of your course. In future years this fee may be subject to change.

Please note this is a two year programme that consists of two courses. Your fee status may change from one year to the next depending on age and circumstance at the start of the next course e.g. if you turn 19 before progressing to the next level, you may be required to pay fees as outlined above.
