This employer approved qualification covers a good grounding for cookery and hospitality services all leading to employment opportunities.
This NVQ course is suitable for anyone either in full-time or part time employment as a chef, or progressing from a Level 1 qualification or those who are able to start a qualification at Level 2. It is perfect if you have also been a chef for a while but have not gained any formal qualifications, as it can be easily fitted around your full or part time work commitments.
To gain an NVQ you need to show you've got a particular set of skills. You will work with your trainer/assessor to review your current skills and find the best way to gain new ones.
NVQs can be assessed either at work or in one of our college realistic working environments. For each unit your assessor watches and asks questions as you perform a task, or looks at a portfolio of work that you've built as formal evidence of your learning. Then they confirm you've got the skills to do the job well.
This qualification covers the required skills and knowledge for preparing to work in the Hospitality & Catering Industry. It is designed to meet the needs of learners who work or want to work in the industry with a focus on food preparation.
The following areas will be covered within this qualification:
• Maintain a safe, hygienic and secure working environment
• Work effectively as part of a hospitality team
• Work effectively as part of a hospitality team

• Produce basic fish dishes
• Produce basic meat dishes
• Produce basic poultry dishes
• Produce basic vegetable dishes
• Prepare hot and cold sandwiches

• Maintain an efficient use of food resources
• Maintain an efficient use of resources in the kitchen
Learners will complete the mandatory units, plus the required optional units to achieve the full qualification.

Entry Requirements

No formal qualifications are required for entry but you must be able to have a good comprehension of English and maths. Any previous skills will be an advantage.
