Course Details

  • This course is a dedicated pathway into the games industry.
  • You will explore Games development theory and apply this in practical elements.
  • A comprehensive range of industry skills and software such as photoshop, 3D modelling on maya, substance painter, unreal engine 4, illustrator, Z brush, VR, AR and experience in the motion capture suite.
  • In the first year you will achieve the Diploma in Games Development, then you can progress onto the second-year extended diploma.
  • A chance to work on live briefs with national employers such as Visbox, Avalanche studios and the NHS.
  • Start: September.
  • 1-year course taught over 4 days, Maths or English will be studied alongside at GCSE.

What to expect from the course

What does it cover? (modules)
Year 1
Unit 1: (3D modelling) Introduction to media methods and technical skills
Unit 2: (Pre-production) Introduction to production techniques in creative media
Unit 3: Introduction to professional practice in creative media production
Unit 4: Critical and contextual awareness
(Unit 3 and 4 is focusing on designing your own game)
Unit 5,6 and 7: Exploring Audio, Visual and interactive media production technologies

If you are successful in the first year then you will have the opportunity to progress onto the second year to complete the following:

Year 2
Unit 9: Characteristics and contexts in media and communication
Unit 10: Engaging with an audience in creative media production
Unit 11: Preparing for progression in creative media production
Unit 12: Specialist study in creative media production
Unit 13: Extended projects in creative media production

How is it assessed?
You will be assessed through a range of methods including presentations, practical work and live assessment opportunities. (No exams!)

UAL Level 3 Diploma in creative media production
Continue to develop Maths and English
Tutorial and Work experience will be part of the study programme to develop life skills, build confidence to progress in your career journey.

UAL Level 3 Diploma in creative media production
NCFE Level 2 certificate in Data protection
Opportunity for Level 2 in Employability Skills
Opportunity to develop Maths and English

Academy Restaurant

Duke Street campus is also home to the College’s Academy Restaurant. Often referred to by it’s customers as Liverpool’s hidden gem, the restaurant serves top class cuisine, at highly competitive prices. Food is expertly prepared by professional chef/tutors and young chefs in training and offers students a range of discounts at different times of the year.

Microsoft Office 365 - Free

When you become a student of the College you’ll receive full access to Microsoft Office 365. This allows you to install the software on your own computer and other devices at home, completely free of charge.

Onsite Sports Facilities/Fitness Suite

The college has excellent sports and fitness facilities at its Roscoe Street campus. Students pay a one-off membership fee for all year round usage of weekly supervised gym sessions, as well as access to a number of sporting clubs and events.


Career pathways


On successful completion of the first year, you can progress onto the second year to achieve the Level 3 extended diploma. From this course, you’ll have the expert skills and experience needed to progress into a variety of careers and including the games industry. If you are interested in continuing your studies, there is the opportunity progress into Higher education on the BA in games design and concept Art.

Entry Requirements

Open to learners of all ages.

Ideal if you have an interest in working in the games development industry.

You will require at least 5 relevant GCSEs 4-9 or a relevant Level 2, including at least one of Maths or English.

Fees

If you are 16-18 years old at the start of your course, studying at The City of Liverpool College is free. If you are aged between 19-23 and don’t have 2 A-Levels (or equivalent), you won't have to pay any fees for this course.

24 years old or over or 19-23 and have 2 A-Levels (or equivalent) at the start of the course? Fees are payable, but you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover the cost of your course. In future years this fee may be subject to change.

Please note this is a two year programme that consists of two courses. Your fee status may change from one year to the next depending on age and circumstance at the start of the next course e.g. if you turn 19 before progressing to the next level, you may be required to pay fees as outlined above.
