What to expect from the course

About the Apprenticeship
Working in domestic and commercial properties and undertaking the decoration and protection of buildings.

About the Role
Painters and Decorators operate in domestic and commercial properties and undertake the decoration and protection of buildings. Properties include houses, schools, offices, hospitals factories and construction sites. Working internally or externally they work individually and/or as part of a team applying water-borne and/or solvent-borne paint coatings and wallcoverings. They have good knowledge of paint coatings and wallcoverings and understand and comply with statutory, safety and environmental requirements. They are responsible for their own work achieving a high quality finish at the appropriate pace. They are good problem solvers and communicators and are able to interact effectively with colleagues, clients and associated trades.


On-Programme Learning
Apprentices need to complete 20% off-the-job training during the on-programme phase of their apprenticeship.Specific rules govern this and it must take place in the apprentice’s contracted hours

Knowledge
Apprentices will understand the characteristics of materials and their reaction to atmospheric conditions and the purpose of a range of equipment, tools and materials. They will understand the principles of costing, pricing and budgeting and methods of formal and informal communication. They will understand types of preparation methods including removal of previous coatings and wallcoverings using hand tools, power tools and chemicals.

Skills
Apprentices will be able to identify hazards and risks in the workplace ensuring a safe environment is maintained at all times. They will be able to interpret specification documents and ensure correct preparation and systems are followed and refer to manufacturers’ product information and data sheets to avoid errors. They will use different application methods brush, roller, spray, power-assisted rollers and special effect tools. They will understand wallpaper using techniques for the hanging of lining paper, standard papers, digital print and wide width.

Behaviours
Apprentices will develop their workplace behaviours, learning to work with others, build positive working relationships, interact with, and influence colleagues and will have working level contact with customers, suppliers and partners in their capacity as an individual contributor.Apprentices will develop strong oral and written communication skills, use their own initiative and take a structured approach to the prioritisation of tasks.

Academy Restaurant

Duke Street campus is also home to the College’s Academy Restaurant. Often referred to by it’s customers as Liverpool’s hidden gem, the restaurant serves top class cuisine, at highly competitive prices. Food is expertly prepared by professional chef/tutors and young chefs in training and offers students a range of discounts at different times of the year.

Microsoft Office 365 - Free

When you become a student of the College you’ll receive full access to Microsoft Office 365. This allows you to install the software on your own computer and other devices at home, completely free of charge.

Onsite Sports Facilities/Fitness Suite

The college has excellent sports and fitness facilities at its Roscoe Street campus. Students pay a one-off membership fee for all year round usage of weekly supervised gym sessions, as well as access to a number of sporting clubs and events.
