What to expect from the course

The Higher National Certificate in Performing Arts (Dance) is a vocational course which explores contemporary and current practice whilst still acknowledging the traditional methods and practices of Dance. The course provides training in dance alongside a focus on contextual studies and industry knowledge. The aim is to enhance the trained dancer's mindset to become a 'thinking' dancer and not a reciprocal one.

Performances may take place in a variety of spaces, including studios, a college theatre and HD multi-camera TV studio, fully equipped for professional performance, local theatres and arts facilities, and site-specific locations.This programme is delivered through in-person teachingModules studied:The Performing Arts IndustryProfessional DevelopmentJazz Dance Ballet Commercial DanceChoreographyDevising Theatre and PerformanceHow will I be taught?Teaching and Learning methods include creative, technical and practical workshop sessions, underpinned with formal lectures and seminars with relevant theoretical, practitioner, historical and cultural reference.Practical modules take place in the studio environment with tutor support and guidance, and with extra independent learning sessions also timetabled to allow access to the specialist equipment and resources. Links with outside arts organisations and professionals allow for a greater range of professional contact and experiential learning.How will I be assessed?The programme is assessed mainly through practical performance and assessment; continuous assessment across rehearsal and development and evaluative interviews to assess personal development and contribution. The submission of written essays, evaluations, logbooks and presentations is also a part of the HNC; learning research, academic skill and writing skill to ensure that students are equipped for higher level learning.Students will gain formative feedback verbally for both written work and practical assessment. Peer and self-assessment is an essential element of personal development which enhances the learning experience and allows space for personal evaluation.

We have a variety of spaces in The Arts Centre; a theatre, rehearsal studios, music studios, HD television studio and new this year, a Video Motion Capture suite, all of which you have the opportunity to utilise.

The Academy Bakery is located on the Duke Street campus, producing a range of first class baked goods daily. These include artisan breads, patisserie and biscuits, as well as special occasion/novelty cakes by award-winning master-bakers. Students are offered a range of discounts throughout the year.

Duke Street is also home to The Academy Hair and Beauty salons. They offer generous student discounts on a wide range of hair and beauty treatments, at a fraction of high-street prices. Academy Restaurant

Duke Street campus is also home to the College’s Academy Restaurant. Often referred to by it’s customers as Liverpool’s hidden gem, the restaurant serves top class cuisine, at highly competitive prices. Food is expertly prepared by professional chef/tutors and young chefs in training and offers students a range of discounts at different times of the year.

When you become a student of the College you’ll receive full access to Microsoft Office 365. This allows you to install the software on your own computer and other devices at home, completely free of charge.

Onsite Sports Facilities/Fitness Suite

The college has excellent sports and fitness facilities at its Roscoe Street campus. Students pay a one-off membership fee for all year round usage of weekly supervised gym sessions, as well as access to a number of sporting clubs and events.


Career pathways

Students who successfully complete this qualification may continue their studies at The City of Liverpool College University Centre and progress onto the level 5 Higher National Diploma (HND) in Performing Arts (Dance). Alternatively, graduates may wish to progress directly into employment in their chosen career or study at another higher education provider.

Entry Requirements

College generic entry requirements apply to all HE programmes. For this particular programme, the following will apply:
• Relevant level 3 qualification, A-level, BTEC or equivalent in an appropriate discipline
• GCSE English Language at grade C or above or equivalent
• National certificate or diploma at Merit standard, or a minimum of two A-levels at grade C or above

We also welcome applications from those with relevant experience in lieu of the minimum entry requirements. Non-standard entry to courses will be at the discretion of the programme leader.

Applicants should hold a total UCAS Tariff points score from relevant qualifications of at least 96 points.

Fees

This course is only available to learners aged 18 and over. Fees are payable by all students unless sponsored by an employer, but you may qualify for a student loan through Student Finance England towards the cost of your course and living costs. Fee for24/25 is 6700.00
In future years we anticipate increasing this fee in line with the annual inflation level (capped at RPI All Items Excluding Mortgage Interest (RPIX)).
