What to expect from the course

About the Apprenticeship
Preparing walls and ceilings for decoration and finishing. The occupation covered by this apprenticeship standard is for a Plasterer that will specialise in either Solid or Fibrous plaster work after undertaking the core learning (which includes introductory elements of both solid and fibrous plastering).

About the Role
The broad purpose of this occupation is to apply layers of plaster onto walls, floors and ceilings. Plastering serves a protective function, in that it makes buildings more robust and also an aesthetic function. Plasterers will often complete dry lining projects during their career. Although a person may specialise solely in dry lining, a plasterer must have the knowledge of dry lining in addition to their knowledge and skills to plaster. In their daily work, an employee in this occupation interacts with commercial and domestic customers, other trades, and site managers.


On-Programme Learning
Apprentices need to complete 20% off-the-job training during the on-programme phase of their apprenticeship.Specific rules govern this and it must take place in the apprentice’s contracted hours.

Knowledge
Apprentice Plasterers will have a knowledge of different eras, types of construction methods and insulation considerations. Apprentices will understand the considerations before completing plastering work. They will have a knowledge of dry lining: materials, methods, and finishes and the application methods for different types of mortars and finishes, including heritage and how to re-instate plastering systems post chemical damp-proof injection.

Skills
Apprentice Plasterers will be able to apply solid plastering systems, using one, two and three coat plastering to internal surfaces. They will be able to run moulds and install cast mouldings, as well as produce reverse moulds. They will renovate and restore internal and external surfaces, and fix beads and trims.Apprentices will select appropriate tools, equipment, materials and components where necessary, and interpret and use drawings and specifications including BIM/CAD.

They will be quality focused and efficient, working with awareness of others on site and other traders Apprentices will keep up-to-date with best practice and new technology and show initiative to independently solve problems.They will have good oral and written communication and will collaborate well with other colleagues, managers, clients and suppliers.

Academy Restaurant

Duke Street campus is also home to the College’s Academy Restaurant. Often referred to by it’s customers as Liverpool’s hidden gem, the restaurant serves top class cuisine, at highly competitive prices. Food is expertly prepared by professional chef/tutors and young chefs in training and offers students a range of discounts at different times of the year.

When you become a student of the College you’ll receive full access to Microsoft Office 365. This allows you to install the software on your own computer and other devices at home, completely free of charge.

Onsite Sports Facilities/Fitness Suite

The college has excellent sports and fitness facilities at its Roscoe Street campus. Students pay a one-off membership fee for all year round usage of weekly supervised gym sessions, as well as access to a number of sporting clubs and events.
