What to expect from the course

The course is designed to enable you to pursue a career in the visual creative industries by developing the skills needed to succeed in a competitive environment.

Through project assignments, you'll have the opportunity to explore a range of digital based design disciplines such as Graphic Design, Illustration, Animation/Motion Graphics, Digital Photography, Media Production and Visual Communication.

The aim of this course is to develop your skills and a knowledge base in the field of graphic design covering disciplines in print design, motion graphics and interactive media. Your portfolio will show samples of work, which explore digital and artistic techniques, methods and approaches. You'lll also develop cultural awareness and a mature attitude towards a potential career in their chosen field.

The course covers core skills such as drawing, printmaking, creative thinking, design theory, research and communication skills. In addition specific software skills will be gained in industry-based packages such as Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, and Premiere.

The majority of students who successfully complete the course progress to Higher Education. Alternatively students have gone straight into employment and have developed careers in the industry. To view work samples created by past and current students from the course visit:

Why study with us?

Students produce work to an exceptional standard and regularly participate in external competitions and live project briefs. The course has provided the opportunity for students to produce work for such organisations as Penguin Random House Publishing, D&DA Awards, Cass Art, Ege (Denmark), TATE ,YCN awards, The Arts Council and The Liverpool Print Fair.

The tutors on the course are both practising designers who work in the fields of Illustration, Graphics and Motion Design. As a result students have the opportunity to work on industry placements and create project work that is relevant to contemporary industry practice.

Academy Bakery

The Academy Bakery is located on the Duke Street campus, producing a range of first class baked goods daily. These include artisan breads, patisserie and biscuits, as well as special occasion/novelty cakes by award-winning master-bakers. Students are offered a range of discounts throughout the year.

Duke Street is also home to The Academy Hair and Beauty salons. They offer generous student discounts on a wide range of hair and beauty treatments, at a fraction of high-street prices. These include styling, cutting, perming, highlights, facials, manicures, electrolysis and traditional and homeopathic massage.

Academy Restaurant

Duke Street campus is also home to the College’s Academy Restaurant. Often referred to by it’s customers as Liverpool’s hidden gem, the restaurant serves top class cuisine, at highly competitive prices. Food is expertly prepared by professional chef/tutors and young chefs in training and offers students a range of discounts at different times of the year.

Microsoft Office 365 - Free

When you become a student of the College you’ll receive full access to Microsoft Office 365. This allows you to install the software on your own computer and other devices at home, completely free of charge.

Onsite Sports Facilities/Fitness Suite

The college has excellent sports and fitness facilities at its Roscoe Street campus. Students pay a one-off membership fee for all year round usage of weekly supervised gym sessions, as well as access to a number of sporting clubs and events.


Career pathways

The course has always received strong positive feedback from past students. The majority of students who successfully complete the course go on to Higher Education courses at respected nationwide Universities and Colleges such as Leeds Met, Liverpool JMU, Westminster, UAL, Falmouth and Manchester Met.

Alternatively, some students have gone straight into employment and have developed their own careers in the creative industry. If you would like to receive industry experience, there is opportunities to develop apprenticeship program opportunities within the course.

Entry Requirements

Designed for all learners with 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above and/or level 2 qualification at grade Merit or above. Grade profile must include at least one GCSE at Maths and/or English at grade 4 or above.

Learners aged 19 and over with an outstanding portfolio of artwork will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Fees

If you are 16-18 years old at the start of your course, studying at The City of Liverpool College is free. If you are aged between 19-23 and don’t have 2 A-Levels (or equivalent), you won't have to pay any fees for this course.

24 years old or over or 19-23 and have 2 A-Levels (or equivalent) at the start of the course? Fees are payable, but you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover the cost of your course. Please note this is a two year programme that consists of two courses. Your fee status may change from one year to the next depending on age and circumstance at the start of the next course e.g. if you turn 19 before progressing to the next level, you may be required to pay fees as outlined above.
