Information for Parents and Carers
Welcome to the College’s Guide to Work Experience for Parents and Carers
Work experience is a fundamental and valuable part of your young person’s course at the College. Learning through work-focused activities is an essential part of career development, not only to guide them in the workplace, but also for their future progression. This includes all activities that directly develop their understanding and ability to function in the world of work.
As a parents/carers of a student undertaking work experience, you can support them in the following ways:
- Discuss the range of job choices within their chosen industry sector, as well as potential employers to approach for a placement.
- Ensure they know where their placement is and how to get there. If using public transport, make sure they know which buses are required, or if cycling, find their safest route to the workplace.
- Encourage them to develop a strong work ethic by adopting good work habits – for example: punctuality; appropriate dress code; positive behaviour; an enthusiastic professional approach.
- Sympathise if things are not going as expected, without being over protective. Empower your young person to find positive solutions by supporting them to contact the employer, Work Experience team and their personal tutor, in an effort to work together towards a positive resolution.
- If you have any family or friends who work in their chosen industry, discuss whether they could offer a work experience placement.
- Once they start their placement, encourage them to keep a log of their activities on the Grofar work placement software app.
PLEASE NOTE: If your young person is aged 16-18, you will need to complete a Parental Consent Form prior to the start of their placement, and return it to: workexperience@liv-coll.ac.uk
